NTP Milieu is carrying out an In Situ remediation project at the former NAF site in Alphen aan den Rijn.
The NAF site is situated along the Oude Rijn in Alphen aan den Rijn and is where the Nederlandse Asphaltfabriek (Dutch Asphalt Plant, or NAF) produced roofing and mastic from 1921 to the early 80s. In addition, carbolineum was purchased and transferred into small barrels on this site. These activities have led to the severe contamination of the soil and water bed in the immediate vicinity.
The Province of Zuid Holland is currently remediating the water bed with an aim of preventing odour nuisance in the surrounding area and the further spread of contamination. At the same time, the dredging sludge is being removed from the water bed, restoring the waterway to its proper depth and allowing the water to flow properly.
The water bed remediation project is a collaborative effort by the City of Alphen aan den Rijn, Rijnland and the Province of Zuid Holland, who all have their own interests. The project is led by the province of Zuid Holland, which means that the province is in charge of communicating with the surrounding areas.
